We're talking about Japanese Light Novels, not English Young Adult fiction here. There's a notable difference in styles, including long-winded terms and visible silences...I have to be blunt here, this rewrite is basically rewriting the entire story according to how a fan wants it, not the author. You don't clamp that many lines into one paragraph for example. The formatting is like that for a reason.--Teh Ping (talk) 01:12, 15 December 2012 (CST)
I was under the impression that's the point of a native speaker editing a translation: to make it flow like it would in the native language. It's the same concept as a poetic translation in music: to cross cultural as well as linguistic barriers, while maintaining the core of the work. I am a published technical writer and YA author, so I thought I could broaden the appeal of a series I love. That said, I don't mean to offend, so if the community prefers I'll keep my edits to myself, I'll do so. --FyreHeart 23:23, 14 December 2012 (PST)
To be fair, I don't really have an idea of how Yen Press and Little Brown does Haruhi and Spice & Wolf, so I have no actual idea of the translation styles that is being used in the West. However, I would have appreciated if you asked around. I do like the new style, but we are amateurs in the first place XD. I can accept it if there were a separate (localized) version of it, but unfortunately, I won't be around for much longer to implement the templates. (and I have no idea who I can hand over the role of supervisor to)--Teh Ping (talk) 01:34, 15 December 2012 (CST)
Isn't that easy enough to do on a sub-page? Like, IS:Volume1 Chapter1/natural translation or IS:Volume1 Chapter1/literal translation? I kinda liked FyreHeart's attempt. (Though, to be fair, I did think the rhetorical questions and interjections like "Awkward!" was somewhat...petulant, for a YA novel style.) -Akira (talk) 01:57, 15 December 2012 (CST)
Yeah, I do like it too. I'm thinking of doing the 'alternate' tabs on one page kind of thing too. Let me try out this one.--Teh Ping (talk) 02:25, 15 December 2012 (CST)
Well, I managed to do up a rewrite nav and stuff for the entire series. Just carry on. Don't mind me now.--Teh Ping (talk) 02:37, 15 December 2012 (CST)

IS: Outstanding Translation Questions[edit]

Any assistance in interpreting the below lines would be greatly appreciated. Segments in contain the content in question.

Line 55: However, since I said it, as a guy, I can't get out of it. 'And the most important thing is that once I form a crack here, I have to face this awkward environment again'

Line 111: Thanks to a year of cramming, I was designated a grade A student. As usual, I went about taking exams, and as usual, I was accepted as per normal, so I wasn't nervous when I walked into the examinations area. Though I knew the name of the examination facility, I didn't exactly know the location, and such a normal public facility has many functions. Though it is rare for a private firm to borrow from the public sector, 'those are all regional enterprises, and many obey it exclusively.'

Line 113: Not good, I'm lost. Speaking of which, why must this facility be constructed in such a confusing manner? 'Seems like it was constructed by some designer with a rather good background. Also, that person should be born from some localized industry.'

Line 201: DANG~! Several girls collapsed onto the floor. What were they expecting from me? 'Stop spouting nonsense.'

Line Unknown: "Ah~ Great. I really wanted to 'switch him over'." <!-- bnns: what does this line even mean? -->

Line Unknown: A certain country 'A' <!-- BNNS: not sure which country is 'A'. -->is really a rogue.

Line ~320: Incidentally, while the IS institute is a profit-earning business, 'there is also education about IS, that make up the daily courses'. <!-- bnns: while it's a business they still teach isn't that what they finished saying up until now that it's a school for training IS pilots this is the first we've heard that it's a business? Is this irony or sarcasm? -->

Line 359: By the way, even though the IS Academy is the world's only specialized IS school, 'a lot of schools with the intention of sending students'<!--bnns: hasn't explained why they have they have the intention of 'sending' does it mean advance?-->, enter the IS study program, so they can enter advanced studies.

IS: Questions' Answers[edit]

Line 53: "Re-really? Really? Really? Ok, 'yo-you said it, so you better do it!'" - This line is in response to the line before it but it doesn't make much sense as a whole... (line before: "No, there's no need to apologize... besides, it's just a self-introduction, so please calm down, sensei.")

Answer 53: "Re-Really? Really? Really? 'Yo-You said it, so you better do it properly, okay?!'" Zero2001 - Talk - 02:24, 24 May 2012 (CDT)

And these questions are better suited to be on the chapter's talk page. Zero2001 - Talk - 02:24, 24 May 2012 (CDT)

Thnx Zero2001, for the answer for line 53. that will definitely help the flow. As per your suggestion, i was thinking that it'd probably be better if i moved it, just a little while ago... I'll do it in the morning. bnns - Talk 02:35, 24 May 2012 (CDT)

Maybe I'm nitpicking but...[edit]

When Cecilia first speaks with Ichika, there is this line: "She pointed her thumb at me, her fingertips nearly touching the tip of my nose." Shouldn't we replace "thumb" by finger ? I feel it doesn't sound right like that.

Translation style[edit]

Before Teh_ping comes in and start asking, I'll like to ask, what's with the rewrites?--Watahashi Kazuyoei (talk) 23:05, 14 December 2012 (CST)

We're talking about Japanese Light Novels, not English Young Adult fiction here. There's a notable difference in styles, including long-winded terms and visible silences...I have to be blunt here, this rewrite is basically rewriting the entire story according to how a fan wants it, not the author.

I can accept it if there were a separate (localized) version of it, but unfortunately, I won't be around for much longer to implement the templates.
