Chapter 4 Best Friend Wants to go to Seaside Mayhem

It was half past five o'clock in the evening, the next day.

After the end of summer cram school, Fuyuumi Ai, Asoi Kaoru, and I all went the family restaurant in front of the station. It had already become a habit to to relaxedly drink tea and go home like this.

"Eh, training!"

Kaoru, who was slowly eating the cream off of his chocolate parfait next to me, opened his eyes wide.

"So the 「Maiden's Club」 is finally doing proper club activities."

"Hahaha, this is mainly due to my efforts!"

Across from me, Fuyuumi very proudly took a huge bite of banana from her banana parfait.

That being said, I only drank Coke. Although ordering drinks alone was rather expensive, but didn't like to eat sweats before dinner. Furthermore, Chiwa was probably hungry waiting at home for me.

"Thanks to you, my peaceful days are getting farther and farther away."

"You're talking like that again—"

Kaoru smiled wryly:

"Eita, you should be happier. With Chihuahua and Natsukawa-san, along with Akishino-san and Ai-chan, aren't you monopolizing all the cute girls at Hane High?"

"Eh……"

"With other boys envying you, I wouldn't find it surpassing if they made one or two straw dolls to curse you with."

"Yeah, when you say it like that—"

Today, when I was in the toilet stall (large) at cram school, Yamamoto-san from the football club was mumbling in the neighboring stall: 「Ah—I wish I was popular. Sigh, I really wish I was popular, really wish I was popular—wish I was popular, I wish I was popular. Do you know why I play soccer? Because I wanted to be popular. I played in a band before because I wanted to popular, but I never became popular. Sigh—you're the only one who's popular. Sigh—you're so popular—I can't forgive you—ah—!」 Rather than mumbling, at the end you were basically shouting. Sorry, Yamamoto-san, if I could, I'd really like it if you could replace me. I'd really like it if you could substitute me, sigh—

"Then, Kaoru, are even you envious of me?"

"Eh? Eh......"

Kaoru tilted his head, and with a somewhat lonely expression that I didn't understand:

"Yeah, you could say I'm very envious."

"Huh?"

"But I envy Natsukawa-san and them all."

"?"

What did that mean? Why would you envy them?

Fuyuumi pounded the table with her fingers:

"Then, Kaoru. Today is my treat, so when it's time to start training, can you please send me a text?"

"I know, we'll meet sooner or later."

They nodded to each other, leaving me in a daze.

"Have you always been texting each other like this? Even though you meet each other at cram school, you still have that much more to say?"

Kaoru smiled wryly:

"No no, we're making an alibi."

"An alibi?"

Fuyuumi lowered her head, a little embarrassed:

"These are supposed to be texts sent by my Michel. Over three days and two nights, it would be weird if I didn't send a text to my boyfriend, right?"

"J-jien-otsu……!" [1]

It seems like Fuyuumi had become a part of a club she truly belonged to.

"But, if the sender displayed 'Kaoru', wouldn't this plan just fall through?"

"No problem, we just have to randomly register a free mailbox."

Why do you have to make it that complicated? You're at at a level equivalent to Masuzu.

"In my opinion, it's better if you give up pretending you have a 「boyfriend」. It's it a huge waste of effort?"

Fuyuumi shrugged:

"You're so dumb. With this kind of thing, it's worst if you leave it halfway, right?"

"Ah, is that so?"

"It's exactly so! After lying once, one should take responsibility for carrying out the job!"

It was a really characteristic of a disciplinary committee member. Even when lying, there were responsibilities.

On the other hand, Kaoru was resting his chin on his hand at the table.

"That being said, since you're going to the beach….. nice: I heard Funase was quite beautiful, not to mention millionaire's houses and fancy restaurants, right?"

"That's around the third beach. We'll be living at the second beach, which is full of tattered hotels."

"Even if that's the case, it's still very enviable. Even if it's just once, I also want to enjoy playing at the beach too."

Kaoru's eyes looked into the distance, and he gloomily sighed.

When he mentioned 'just once', did that mean Kaoru had never been to the beach? Hime too, were there actually many people like that?

"If you can, why don't you come too? If it's just one person, I just have to ask Saeko-san, and it's probably no problem."

Kaoru smiled wryly and waved his hands back and forth:

"I said before, right? I can't be in the sun. If I'm on the beach at the height of summer, it'll be pretty bad."

"Oh right, I'm sorry."

"Don't worry about it, your kind thought makes me very happy—if it weren't for my body, I could probably go with you."

"......Ah."

I always felt his statements were very subtle.

"But just let me act a little spoiled then……?"

Kaoru shifted slightly towards the side, nestled against my side with his shoulders close to mine.

He laid down his head, and leaned his face only my shoulder like a little girl.

His hair had a very fragment smell, and it felt somehow felt rather strange.

"W-What are you doing all of a sudden?"

Kaoru smiled and laughed, 「Hahaha~」:

"Let me take part in summer training camp, okay?"

"……Uhh......"

Kaoru sometimes did these puzzling things, but it was't something to mind about.

On the other hand, Fuyuumi who sat opposite to us looked as if she was in a flaming enraged state. The straw she held in her mouth went 「Poof—!」 as her cheek inflated.

"What's with this! You look so satisfied as you set me aside like a bystander!"

"Sorry sorry, Ai-chan. Don't worry, I won't take away Eita, okay?"

Kaoru smiled and returned to his original position, and that was the end of summer training.

At this moment, the cellphone that Fuyuumi left on the table sounded with a melody. It looked like it was a text message.

"Who sent it?"

"Himecchi. We've been texting each other recently."

Fuyuumi said as she replied, swiftly manipulating her fingers. Girls texted really fast.

"What did you say to her?"

"Of course it was a love consultation. After all, I'm her master."

Fuyuumi rather proudly archer her shoulders.

"Don't infect her with too weird ideas. Hime's not the same as us. She's very innocent."

"I-I'm also very innocent! Yeah, you're really rude!"

As Kaoru finished his parfait, he used a napkin to wipe his mouth and spoke:

"But it's quite strange that fiancee Ai-chan would actually give Eita's ex-girlfriend Akishino-san advice."

"Indeed."

Generally speaking, this was something that people couldn't imagine, but it was quite a beautiful scene.

"Eh? Have I told Kaoru about the 「ex-girlfriend」 thing before?"

"I heard Ai-chan mention it. When I heard about the girlfriend from a previous life, my eyes became small dots." [2]

So, the news had been leaked.

After Fuyuumi finished replying, she put down the phone:

"As to what the former girlfriend or past-life girlfriend chatted about, I won't talk about it—for me, it was basically teaching her methods of love, so it was like changing Himecchi in into an ordinary girl."

"Ah."

As a 「weirdo」 at school and shy of crowds, Hime's been trying to change bit by bit after she joined the club. I also wanted to help her as well.

Kaoru tilted his head and said:

"But is that okay, Ai-chan? Like this, won't should become a powerful rival contending for Eita?"

"No problem, don't worry about it."

The disciplinary committee member's confidence.

I was afraid to ask:

"Why are you so sure?"

"It's very simple—"

Fuyuumi smiled, revealing her white teeth:

"If Himecchi becomes an ordinary girl, it's impossible for her to like Eita!"

"......"

What kind of expression was I supposed to make in this situation?

Should I be angry?

Or should I smile wryly and said: 「that's true—」?

"Ahaha, that's so true—"

"Kaoru, why are you smiling?!"

So originally I was going to…… was going to that?

No, when I was in middle school, I was like that.

But ever since I went to high school, I've been very rule-abiding, very ordinary, very serious, very ord……inary…..

I suddenly felt very discouraged, and Fuyuumi patted my shoulder.

"The only person who can take care of Ta-kun is me. Before you get dumped by the other three, isn't it better to just stamp it now?" [3]

"Who. Would. Want. To. Stamp. It! Idiot—"

I hoarse shout echoed through the family restaurant in the evening.

When I'm together with Ai-chan, these shouts just never stop!

  1. Self-performing, play-acting!
  2. This is a parody of how manga characters are drawn when in shock.
  3. Ai-chan is referring to the marriage registration form.
