Maria-sama ga Miteru (マリア様がみてる) is a Japanese light novel series written by Oyuki Konno and illustrated by Reine Hibiki. The series was published by Shueisha under their Cobalt imprint. Many of the short stories, first published in the Cobalt magazine, were later included in the novels. The series has finished with 37 published volumes and two non-literary special editions.

Story Synopsis

Maria-sama ga Miteru's story revolves around Fukuzawa Yumi, her friends and fellow students, and their time attending the fictional private Catholic school Lillian Girls' Academy. A large focus of the story is the student council (the Yamayurikai) and its members, as well as the day to day interactions and relationships between the students. At Lillian, there is a tradition known as the sœur system (sœur being French for "sister"). In this system, a second- or third-year student, the grande sœur (big sister), will give her rosary to a junior student, the petite sœur (little sister), and promise to guide and look after them. Being a part of this system is highly desirable and respected by the student body.
