Brief Intro

Hello there. I am the Project Manager of Toaru Majutsu no Index. I have studied Japanese for a few years so I am probably at Kindergarten level when it comes to speaking and understanding. Not enough to actually translate light novels but enough to compare translations with the original Japanese text and speech.

Project Manager

For reasons I don't want to get into here, the former Toaru Majutsu no Index Project Manager removed his name from the Project page. As I have been the one making the most edits on the page for a few months now, I naturally filled the role. Don't expect anything to change on the page though. The functioning of the page is something that has taken over 5 years to perfect and I don't see any reason to interfere with the process now. The look of the page may have changed but at its core, the page functions just like it did months ago.

EDIT: As announced by Teh Ping, the Side Stories and New Testament Series will be kept on the site while the First Series will be deleted at a rate of one volume per month starting from this September. At the beginning of next year, the process will be reviewed and revised taking into account any events that have occured. Current To Do List

• Fix up terminology in Index Volumes 1-SS1 (novels not translated by js06) starting from Volume 1 Prologue.

Finished working on translating terms in the Toaru Majutsu no Index no Subete Encyclopedia Glossary.

All pages have been found for the Subete Encyclopedia. A big thank you to Ultranova17 for supplying HQ scans for the last missing pages.

• Fix up Notes Sections across Index Volumes (so that there arent any random translator's notes in the actual translated text).
• Then expand the notes sections with base kanji for certain terminology.

• Update calendar depending on LN story progression
• Implement templates on main page when time is right
• Maintain implemented templates
• Complete MC template; consult Editors about inclusion on Main Page

• Wait for final 7 announcements in 10th anniversary project

• Force myself to work on fixing the early light novel translations. I'll have to take shortcuts though.

Progress

Now that I have finished translating what I can of the Subete Encyclopedia Glossary, I am essentially ready to start fixing up the earlier Index volumes.

Here's how I will go about doing it...

1) Compile a list of volume specific questions regarding translations.

2) Send said questions to js06 and wait for an eventual response.

3) Using the answers and my custom glossaries references, begin editing the volume, part-by-part.

• Repeat the process for the next volume.

Completed: Volume 1 Now I am awaiting feedback.

Currently working on: Volume 01 and Volume 02 simultaneously

Currently on Step: 1): Volume 2 - Stalled due to real life commitments, time constraints and a current lack of motivation

Feedback on the edits should go to the relevent section on my talk page. Volume 2 edits will need more time with further questions to be sent to js06. In the mean time Volume 1 Feedback will suffice.

• Volumes 1-2 will function as a trial. I will be waiting for feedback on my edits regarding these two volumes before continuing.

My Long Run Focus

While TAMNI stands as the biggest translation project on Baka-Tsuki, it is by no means perfect. Attention to detail has always been one of my strong points so I will try and fix the things that the other editors have missed. My focus will be on correct grammar and spelling, correct use of terminology, looking for any missing details in earlier translations, revamping the notes sections and the boring task of standardising the presentation format accross all of the light novel translations.

Calendar Project

I also have a pet project I am working on called A Certain Unified Calendar. It tries to organise all of the events which have occurred in the TAMNI and TAKNR collective franchise into chronological order and place them onto a calendar. I am currently planning the way in which I shall present the project's notes section.

The calendar will be updated as soon as the light novels get sufficiently far ahead chronologically (~NT10 or 11 depending on the story progression).

Characters' Introduction

Kamijou Touma

Classification: Esper

Affiliation: Academy City - A Certain High School

Ability: Level 0

Power: Imagine Breaker

The primary male protagonist of the series. Despite being classified as a Level 0 esper, his right hand possesses the uncanny ability to negate all forms of supernatural phenomena upon contact including magic, esper powers and - much to his chagrin - his own good luck. Touma is the type that acts before he thinks. He can never just sit around upon seeing someone in a pinch and will go to great lengths to protect or help the person. This he does at great risk to himself, which typically results in him being hospitalized. While he is an idealist for the hopes of other people, ironically he is cynical about himself possibly because of his powers.

Magic Name: Dedicatus545

Power: Index Librorum Prohibitorum

The titular main heroine of the series. Due to her possessing a perfect memory, her mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum: 103,000 grimoires that have been removed from circulation. As such she holds a vast amount of magical knowledge that if properly used would allow her reach the realm of a magic god. Despite this, Index is unable to cast any magic herself; however she can use the grimoires' knowledge to analyze spells and protect herself from enemy magicians. She is an enormous glutton who despite having great knowledge of history and culture, is completely clueless about science and technology.

Misaka Mikoto

Classification: Esper

Affiliation: Academy City - Tokiwadai Middle School

Ability: #3 Level 5 - Railgun

Power: Strongest Electromaster

The second main heroine of the series. As Academy City's strongest Electromaster, she can generate up to 1 billion volts of electricity, enough to cause city wide blackouts. She gains her ability name from using her ability to quickly accelerate small arcade coins to Mach speeds, resulting in a makeshift railgun. Despite displaying an image of being a refined lady from the prestigious Tokiwadai Middle School, in reality she's short-tempered, prideful, and has an improper attitude with some slight tomboyish tendencies and insecurities. Even so, she is generally friendly and easygoing and doesn't look down on lower-level espers at all.

Stiyl Magnus

Classification: Magician

Affliliation: Anglican Church - Necessarius

Magic Name: Fortis931

Power: Flame and Runic Magic

A formidable magician from Necessarius wearing a black priest's attire who reports directly to the Archbishop. He specializes in flame and runic magic which he uses in conjunction with specially made rune cards to distribute his magic power. With it he can create flame swords to use as a weapon and mirages to confuse the opponent. His greatest spell is Innocentius: a self-regenerating fire monster clad in 3000°C flames. Despite appearing to be an adult with a short temper, he is a tall teenager that hides his kind heart. A former partner of Index; he fights to protect her from any harm.

Affiliation: Academy City - Nagatenjouki Academy

Ability: #1 Level 5 - Accelerator

Power: Vector Transformation

The second male protagonist of the series. He is Academy City's strongest esper with the ability to manipulate the vectors of anything that he touches. In the past, he was involved in a great incident due to his powers which left him greatly distrustful of all those around him. His school life had him completely separated from other students while his title of the strongest has led him to be constantly targetted by delinquents and other challengers looking for fame. As a result, he believes only in power and trusts no one. While fighting, he invokes fear and has a sadistic tone. Despite all of this, deep down he is someone that aches for the light.

Kanzaki Kaori

Classification: Magician

Affiliation: Anglican Church - Necessarius; Amakusa Christian Church - Priestess

Magic Name: Salvare000

Power: Saint; Amakusa-style Combat/Magic

One of the top 10 magicians in London also known as the Breaker of God. She is one of less than 20 saints in the world thereby giving her superhuman strength, speed and magical ability. She brandishes a long nodachi in battle with the name Shichiten Shichitou which she uses in conjunction with steel wires to perform combat and form magical symbols. Previously the Priestess of the Amakusa Christian Church, she defected to Necessarius after seeing her own blessing inflict misfortune to the comrades she was protecting. She too is a former partner of Index and holds great respect for Kamijou who saved her.

Ability: Level 3 - Electromaster

Power: Console of the Misaka Network

A young girl that appears before Accelerator. She is Serial Number 20001 of the Sisters who acts as the console or administator of the entire Misaka Network and has direct control all of the information that flows through it as well as the rest of the Sisters. As such she has access to all of the information and memories that the rest of the Sisters experience; leading to her being incredibly knowledgable despite her apparent age. Unlike her older Sisters she can display emotions and acts just like any other girl her apparent age would. Her role as the Network's console makes her highly sought after by Academy City's dark side.

Tsuchimikado Motoharu

Classification: Hybrid

Affiliation: Anglican Church - Necessarius; Academy City - A Certain High School

Ability: Level 0 - Auto-Rebirth

Magic Name: Fallere825

Power: Onmyoudou

A classmate, neighbour and friend of Kamijou Touma. In reality, he is a spy sent by Necessarius in order to observe Academy City. He regularly plays the role of a double agent and is involved in both magicial incidents and Academy City's dark side. He comes from a family who are descendents of Abe no Seimei and is thus a skilled Onmyouji specializing in eastern magic and feng shui. Due to the fact that his esper ability repairs broken blood vessels, he is the only magician/esper hybrid in the world. He fights for the sake of protecting his younger stepsister, Maika.

Hamazura Shiage

Classification: Esper

Affiliation: Academy City - Skill Out

Ability: Level 0

Power: N/A

The third male protagonist of the series. After being determined to be a Level 0 by the Academy City System Scan, his failure to increase his Level led him to dropping out of school and joined the Skill-Out. Chosen by no one and possessing none of the characteristics one would expect of a hero, he fights for the sake of protecting his loved ones.

Itsuwa

Classification: Magician

Affiliation: Anglican Church - Necessarius; Amakusa Christian Church

Magic Name: N/A

Power: Amakusa-style Combat/Magic

A young girl who is a member of the Amakusa Christian Church. She is skilled in housework and cooking but is also a competent magician with great vehicular skills. Her weapon of choice is a Friuli Spear used in conjunction with steel wires similar to Kanzaki.
