“How much did the higher ups know?”

What are you talking about?

“Yes, yes. I know it can be difficult to maintain that look that says everything went according to plan…but this one was a little much, wasn’t it?”

“Information Broker Norsitro Chatellenie was an expert at monetizing threats and a villain with no interest in distributing technology. But that was just happenstance, wasn’t it? If an expert at distribution had known of that vulnerability, Academy City would have collapsed. So isn’t it odd to insist you knew about this but ignored it?”

“I do wonder sometimes if you higher ups are giving any of this any thought at all.”

“No, no. Your monopoly on the city’s tech remains intact and the world is at peace, so you can of course always say Norsitro’s hesitation was part of your plan.”

Then just go with that. It is the truth, after all.

“But I can’t help but wonder if you higher ups don’t have anything going on upstairs.”

“And if that’s true, then who is it that’s really maintaining the world’s power balance?”

Sorry.

I forgot to mention it, but this is the end of the road for you.

This was all rather unexpected. Yes, I do apologize for not having anything going on upstairs.

…Also, #6, this one is on you. If you hadn’t interfered, this never would have happened.

“Hm??? What in the world are you talking about, Board Chair- gah!?”

It was like a switch being thrown.

It was that sort of instant death.

Life was over for the person whose head was split open by a blunt object from behind and they likely had no idea what had even happened.

It happened late at night on the top floor of a skyscraper among the high-end offices of District 3.

A woman’s head lay on a luxurious desk with red pooled around it.

Someone stood directly behind her.

Stained red by blood and shoulders heaving with her heavy breaths was Hanano Choubi.

She had just reclaimed her position as the Voice on the Phone by killing the woman who had stolen the seat from her while she was away.

The murder weapon was a metal bat.

Academy City’s dark side was an insane world filled with all sorts of deadly tools – yes, including mini-nukes made from a super heavy element – but this particular tool was exceptionally common even there. Hanano Choubi gripped the blunt weapon again as if confirming the sensation in her hands.

“I am! The Voice on the Phone!”

A dull sound followed.

To reiterate, the woman had been killed instantly. So the twitching of the limbs with each new blow to the crushed head had nothing at all to do with life activity. The human body was operated by the brain, so a powerful stimulus there could control the body externally. This was a far too obvious example.

Hanano knew the target was already dead.

And that the true target of her hatred was not the woman who had been ordered to take this seat.

But that wasn’t enough to quell her anger.

“Me! Me!! Only me!!! …I won’t let anyone else have it. Only Hanano Choubi can hold this position. As long as that weight keeps me a part of this world, then I can continue to cling to my position as a confirmed survivor from here on as well!!”

Hanano Choubi shouted to someone who was not present.

Someone she suspected to be listening in somehow or other.

So you could call this a form of harassment directed at that monster who loathed killing.

“Goddamn you, #6!! I’ll show you… I will get back at you for making a fool of me. You call yourself the Dark Side’s Bane? Well, I’ll show you just how bad an idea it is to make an enemy of me. It’s always like this with youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!”

Destiny was not fixed.

Especially given how crucial observation was in the quantum theory that Academy City specialized in and researched.

Furthermore, quantum theory itself was not a toy just for espers.
