4			俺たちだけの… 本当に内輪だけの話題だったはずの、 一つの小さな記事は。	What was meant to just be between us... Something really only meant to be discussed by us, a small article.
5	麻理	Mari	「このぺージのコがかなり反響大きくてね。 隔月刊の音楽誌の方で記事作ることになったのよ」	"The girl on this page became quite a topic. The monthly musical magazine department wants to write an article on her."
6	木崎	Kizaki	「あ～、こりゃ反響あるわ～。 一発で目惹くもんな」	"Ah, I can definitely see why. She sure does stand out."

10			いつの間にか、対象者の結構な話題性のせいで、 その輪っかを微妙に外れつつあるようだった。	Before I knew it, the topic in question has already caught fire, and no longer only belonged to us.
11	麻理	Mari	「『アンサンブル』の編集長がこのコの母親… 冬馬曜子と親しいらしくて、 あっさり取材許可も下りたみたい」	"The chief editor over at 'Ensemble' seems to be on good terms with this girl's mother... with Touma Youko, and got the interview permissions pretty easily."
12	松岡	Matsuoka	「冬馬曜子って… 俺、子供の頃テレビで見たことありますよ」	"Touma Youko, huh? I'm pretty sure I saw her on TV when I was a kid."
13	木崎	Kizaki	「一時は日本を代表するピアニストだったからな。 ま、今はずっとヨーロッパで活動してるから、 国内じゃ昔ほど有名じゃないけど」	"She was at the top of the Japanese pianists for a while back then, after all. But since she's mostly only active in Europe these days, she's not as famous here as she was before."

16			やっぱりこうして一般的な話題の端に上ると、 かなり普通じゃない評価をされるみたいだった。	Even in such a simple, everyday conversation, the praise you hear for her really is something else.
17	鈴木	Suzuki	「その娘が国際コンクールで入賞。 しかもこのビジュアルとあっちゃ、 そりゃ、周りが放っておきませんよね」	"And now her daughter's winning awards at international competitions while looking as great as this. There's no way this wouldn't catch people's attention."
18	春希	Haruki	「そう…なんですか？」	"Is... that right?"

20			どうして、この記事だけで、 かずさのこと、そんなに持ち上げるんだ？	How could they sing Kazusa's praises like this knowing nothing other than what's on this article?
21			ちょっと海外で結果を出した留学生なだけで、 ちょっと親が有名人なだけで…	She's just some student studying abroad who just happened to produce some results, and who just happens to be the daughter of someone pretty famous...

23	麻理	Mari	「あっちの雑誌、本来なら編プロにグロスで 発注してるんだけど、今回のは急遽決まった企画だし、 元ネタ拾ってきたのが私だし…」	"Normally their editorial team is supposed to be sending the printing order, but we decided on this pretty quickly, not to mention I came up with the original idea..."
24	浜田	Hamada	「要するに、 また他の編集部の仕事を引き受けてきた、と」	"So in a nutshell, you went and grabbed work from another department again."
25	鈴木	Suzuki	「ほんっと北原君のこと叱れないですよね～。 上司が編集部またぎのプロなんだもん」	"We really shouldn't be criticizing Haruki-kun then~ His superior is such a pro at working across multiple departments after all."
26	麻理	Mari	「ちゃんと両編集長には許可もらってる。 それに隔月刊の締め切りなんて余裕だし」	"I already got the okay from both chief editors. There's also more than enough time until the monthly's deadline."
27	浜田	Hamada	「そう言って地獄を見…るけど、 それでもなんとかするのがコイツなんだよなぁ…」	"The future looks pretty bleak... to me, but getting through stuff like this is her specialty.
28			なんで、こんなことに…	How, did it end up like this...
29	麻理	Mari	「そんな訳で北原… あんたには引き続きこっちの記事を担当してもらう」	"With that said, Kitahara... I'll have you finish what you started and leave you in charge of this article."
30	春希	Haruki	「え…」	"Eh..."
31			そんな麻理さんの言葉は、 まったく逆方向からの二つの衝撃を、 俺にもたらした。	Mari-san's words struck me hard from two opposite directions.
32	鈴木	Suzuki	「た、担当してもらうって、だって…」	"L-leave him in charge? But..."
33	木崎	Kizaki	「バイトだぞ、北原…」	"Kitahara's just a part-timer..."
34			『記事を担当してもらう』ってことは、 要するに取材も執筆も…ってことで、多分。	"Leaving me in charge" probably means I'd need to take care of both the information gathering and the article writing myself.
35			それは今までの、コピー取ったり、買い出し行ってきたり、 出前取ったり、原稿取りに行ったり、レイアウト組んだり、 校正したり、印刷所に頭下げたりとは…	That's way different from my usual responsibilities of just making copies, buying something, getting food, picking up the manuscript, fixing the layout, quality checking, and talking to the printing company...	Way longer in English than in Japanese. Meaning wise just a few of these is fine if it's too long. Cut from the middle outwards, reasons why in the next line.
36			…後半は既にバイトの範囲を逸脱してるかもしれないけど、 それでもそれらの仕事とはまるで一線を画す、 本物の『本作り』の仕事。	...Even though the last half of that is slightly beyond the responsibilities of just some part-timer, there's a thin line between me and an actual employee's work, where you're actually meant to "create".
37			まさか学生バイト風情で、 こんなチャンスが回ってくるなんて…	I never thought a part-timing student like myself would ever be given the opportunity to...
38	麻理	Mari	「異論は？」	"Any complaints?"
39			けど…	But...
40			この仕事を引き受けるってことは、 つまり、取材対象に深入りするってこと。	If I take on this job, I'll need to thoroughly research the interviewee.
41			経歴を調べ、関係者の話を聞き、 あいつが生きてきた足跡を辿るっていうこと。	Looking up her history, talking to her acquaintances, and searching around her past footsteps.
42			俺に、そんなことできるのか？ もう一度、あいつの記憶を掘り起こすなんて。	Can I really do something like that? Can I really dig up my memories of her again?

46	麻理	Mari	「え…？」	"Eh...?"
47			俺の意見を聞いておきながら、 麻理さんは、俺の答えに少しだけうろたえたみたいだった。	Hearing my response, Mari-san seems to be at a loss.
48			それは、人に仕事を振りまくっておきながら、 人のことを働きすぎだと糾弾したりする、 そんな矛盾を抱えたこの人らしい反応だったけど…	But this does seem like a fitting reaction for someone as contradictory as her, stuffing work down my throat and saying that I work too much at the same time.
49	麻理	Mari	「もしかして、今の自分にその能力がないと思ってる？ それはちょっと過小評価だと思うけどな」	"Do you think you're not skilled enough to take it on? I'd say you're underestimating yourself if that's the case."
50	春希	Haruki	「…そんなの、買いかぶりすぎですよ」	"...Not at all, it's you that's overestimating me."
51			今の俺には、その肩入れが心苦しい。	Right now, this project would only make me suffer.
52			それも、麻理さんの思惑とはまったく関係ない部分で そう感じてしまうのが、さらに辛い。	And knowing that the issue has nothing to do with what Mari-san's worried about only makes it worse.
53	麻理	Mari	「だって、あんた書きたかったんじゃないの？ 出版狙ってるから経験積みたいって言ってたわよね？」	"But haven't you been wanting to write something for a while? Didn't you say you wanted to get into publishing and so wanted to gain some experience?"
54	春希	Haruki	「それは…」	"That's..."
55			確かに言った。	That's exactly what I said.
56			言っただけでなく、言葉以外でもアピールしてきた。 『俺にもっと大きな仕事をよこせ』って。 『何もかも忘れられるくらい働かせろ』って。	And not just with words, I did everything I can to get a chance at it. "Please entrust me with more challenging tasks!" and "Please work me until I forget my first name!" and whatnot.
57			けど、何もかも忘れるためのに選んだ仕事で、 皮肉にも、自分がもっとも忘れたかったことを 思い出さなくちゃならないとしたら…	But all of that work was meant to help me forget. It'd be pretty ironic if I took on a job that forced me to recall what I've been trying to forget...
58	麻理	Mari	「これじゃ私、なんのために無理やり外注から仕事奪って ………あ」	"Then doesn't that mean taking this job from them by force was a waste of... ...Ah."
59	春希	Haruki	「麻理さん…？」	"Mari-san...?"
60	木崎	Kizaki	「あんた、何してきたんすか…」	"Just, what are you trying to do?"
61	鈴木	Suzuki	「どれだけ北原君のこと買ってんですか麻理さん… 社員にだってそんなに目かけたことないのに。 松っちゃんがいい例」	"Just how much faith do you have in Haruki-kun, Mari-san...? You've never done this much for the regular employees here. Macchan for example."	"Macchan" being her nickname for Matsuoka
62	松岡	Matsuoka	「なんで俺に振るんだよ！？」	"Why are you bringing me into this!?"
63			人には余計な仕事を請けるなと忠告しておきながら、 自分は俺のために新しい仕事を発掘しまくってくる…	Saying that I'm working too hard, and at the same time, making the effort to find more work opportunities for me.
64	麻理	Mari	「そっか… 私の先走りだったか。 なんだか逆に悪いことしたね、北原」	"I see... I guess I got a little ahead of myself. Looks like I caused you some trouble instead, Kitahara."
65	春希	Haruki	「麻理さん…」	"Mari-san..."
66			それもやっぱり、なんというか、 微笑ましい矛盾を抱えた、この人らしい動き方だった。	But that's, how should I put it? To carry as charming a contradiction as this, really does seem like something she would do.
67	麻理	Mari	「さてと、どうするかな… 北原以外、想定してなかったんだけど…」	"Now then, what should I do...? I didn't really decide on anyone other than Kitahara..."
68	松岡	Matsuoka	「お、俺やります麻理さん！ 鈴木にそこまで言われて黙ってられますか！」	"I-I'll do it, Mari-san! I can't just take what Suzuki said sitting down."
69	麻理	Mari	「松岡は浜田の下じゃない。 上司が貸してくれるってんならいいけど…」	"Hamada's in charge of you, right Matsuoka? If he'd be willing to lend you to me I might consider it..."
70	浜田	Hamada	「ふざけるな。寝言こいてる暇があったら さっさと俺が振ったテープ起こし終わらせろ。 北原に頼んだ分はもう上がったぞ」	"Not a chance in hell. If you have time daydreaming like that, hurry up and finish that recording. The ones I gave to Kitahara are already done, you know?"
71	麻理	Mari	「北原に頼んだ？」	"The ones you gave to Kitahara?"
72	浜田	Hamada	「あ、いや…」	"Ah, I mean..."
73	松岡	Matsuoka	「嘘ぉ！？ あれ昨日回ってきたばっかじゃ…」	"Seriously!? Didn't we just get those yesterday..."
74	鈴木	Suzuki	「北原君、今朝わたしが出社してきたとき、 今から大学行くって退社してったんだよ」	"When I got to the office this morning and saw Kitahara-kun, he said he was just about to head to university."
75	麻理	Mari	「今朝…？」	"This morning...?"
76	木崎	Kizaki	「お前、完全にバイトに追い抜かれてるな… 勤務態度も、成果も、信頼も」	"You've been totally surpassed by a part-timer... Be it your work ethic, results, or reliability."
77	松岡	Matsuoka	「いや、北原と比較して欲しくないですよ。 こいつは大学三年生でしょ？ 俺まだ二年生ですから」	"Hey, I don't want to be compared with Kitahara like that. He's a third year student, you know? I'm only in my second year."
78	浜田	Hamada	「大卒二年目を二年生って言うんならな…」	"I guess if you count a second year graduate student as 'second year'..."
79	鈴木	Suzuki	「なんてプライドのない社会人…」	"Don't you have any pride as a member of society...?"
80	麻理	Mari	「ちょっと北原… 朝帰りって何よ？ 私聞いてないわよ？」	"Hold on, Kithara... What's this about you leaving in the morning? You didn't tell me about this."
81	春希	Haruki	「すいません麻理さん。 さっきの発言、撤回します」	"Sorry Mari-san. I'd like to take back what I said."
82	麻理	Mari	「そんな話はあと！ あんた昨日一体何時まで残って…え？」	"Leave that for later! Just how long did you stay here last night... Eh?"
83	春希	Haruki	「俺にやらせてください。 …冬馬かずさの特集記事」	"Please let me handle it. ...Touma Kazusa's featured article."
84			だったら俺は… ここで退く訳にはいかない。	In that case there's... no way I can back down here.
85			まだ、俺に信頼を寄せてくれる人がいるなら、 もう、裏切りたくはないから。	Because if there's still someone who's willing to put their faith in me, then I'd hate to betray that trust.
86	春希	Haruki	「やります。 是非やらせてください」	"I accept. Please leave it to me."	Lines until the end are if choice 2 is selected
87			それでも俺は、やっぱり前に進む道を選ぶしかない。	Even so, I have no choice but to move forward.
88			たとえ、目的を達成するための手段が、 逆に目的を阻害することになったとしても、 今の俺にとって、この手段は将来へと繋がる道標だから。	Even if the means to the end would actually contradict said end, it's the signpost that's pointing towards my future.	I might have used "means to an end" wrong. He's saying even though him writing the article would get in the way of him using work as an escape from reality... etc.

90	麻理	Mari	「それじゃ、早速向こうの編集長のところに行くわよ。 ついてきなさい、北原」	"In that case, let's head over to their chief editor right now. Come with me, Kitahara."
91	松岡	Matsuoka	「って、ちょっと待ってくださいよ麻理さん！ 俺だってそういう仕事やりたいですよ。 ここにいると浜田さんのパシリばっかなんだもん」	"H-hold on a second Mari-san! I want to do something like that too. All I do around here is run errands for Hamada-san anyway."
92	浜田	Hamada	「そりゃ、パシリの腕の差だろ。 北原は買い出し行って一時間帰ってこないなんてこと 一度もなかったぞ？」	"Don't talk like you mastered errand running. Whenever Kitahara's sent to buy something, he's never taken over an hour, you know?"
93	松岡	Matsuoka	「え？　あ、いや… 頼まれたコーヒーが実は千葉と埼玉限定で…」	"Eh? Ah, well... That coffee you asked for was actually only available in Chiba and Saitama..."
94	木崎	Kizaki	「そっか、じゃあ俺が何度も見かけた コンビニで立ち読み中のお前は幻覚だったんだ。 何しろ千葉まで遠征してるんじゃなぁ」	"Is that so? So I was just hallucinating all those times I saw you reading in some convenience store, huh? You were making an expedition to Chiba, after all."
95	松岡	Matsuoka	「あ～！ 木崎さん裏切り者っ！？」	"Ah~! Are you backstabbing me, Kizaki-san!?"
96	鈴木	Suzuki	「そういう地道な積み重ねが 肝心なところで効いてくるんだよねぇ…」	"Those little things can add up over time and hit you where it hurts..."
97	麻理	Mari	「ま、それもあるけど… 実は北原に任せる理由はもう一つあるの」	"Well, that's one thing... But I have another reason to give this job to Kitahara."	I originally have the first part here as "Well, there's that..." but can't find a good way to do line 99 with that. Details there.
98	木崎	Kizaki	「もう一つって？」	"What's that?"
99	松岡	Matsuoka	「それもあるんだ…」	"So that was a thing..."	"was" would be in italics if that's a feature. Referring to Mari's "Well, that's one thing..." earlier, i.e. not denying Matsuoka's incompetence.
100	麻理	Mari	「北原は薄々気づいてるんじゃないかと思うけど…」	"You probably already realized it, right Kitahara?"
101	春希	Haruki	「ええ、ま…」	"Yeah, well..."
102			もちろん、気づいてた。	Of course I realized it.
103			麻理さんは、その程度のアドバンテージで、 俺にこんな美味しい仕事を回すはずがない。	Mari-san wouldn't give me such an amazing opportunity just because I'm a little better than some of the others.
104			俺に回す旨みがあるってわかってるから… つまり、そこまでちゃんと下調べが済んでいるからこそ、 俺を指名したんだって。	She knows letting me handle it has certain advantages... Basically, she's already done her research, that's why she's picking me specifically.
105	麻理	Mari	「というわけで、 まずは彼女が日本にいたときに通ってた学校から… って、後はわかってるわよね？　北原」	"At any rate, you'll begin with looking around the schools she attended back when she was still in Japan. You know what to do after, right Kitahara?"
106	春希	Haruki	「ええ、わかってます。 先生方には一応信用あった方なんで、 多分、許可は下りると思います」	"Yes, I understand. I've built up a lot of trust with the teachers in the past, I do believe they'll give me permission."

108			トラスティ国際コンクールピアノ部門２位。 母親は世界的ピアニストの冬馬曜子。 三年前より母子でウィーン在住。	Second place at the Trustee International Piano Competition. Daughter of a world class pianist, Touma Youko. Living together with her mother in Vienna since three years ago.	I'm not a hundred percent on "Trustee" but I know it's fictional. All that matters is that it's consistent if it pops up elsewhere

110	春希	Haruki	「俺の同級生だったんですよ、彼女」	"She was my schoolmate some time back."	Not sure what a good term is for someone in the same year at the same school, but NOT classmate. See lines 114/115 for why

115			最後の最後についた小さな嘘は… 俺の、たった一つだけまとった、心の鎧だった。	That little white lie I leave at the very end, is the only armour left still protecting the depths of my heart.
